Beginner RC Planes - What Makes the Best Beginner RC Plane

Beginner RC Planes - What Makes the Best Beginner RC Plane

Rc Helicopter

When getting started in rc flying you're going to have to make the decision of what's going to be your very first plane. Being a beginner pilot you are going to want a beginner plane. Let's take a look at some of the attributes that make a good beginner plane.

1. Electric powered. Electric powered planes are much cheaper and easier to use than gas powered. You turn them on and they are ready to go. Gas powered motors need a special fuel and then you have to tune them. It's a lot more work. Also electric planes are much cheaper than gas powered. Most beginner electric planes come with everything you need to fly. For a gas powered plane you need to purchase everything separate.

2. Top Wing design. This is a plane that has the wing on top of the plane. Having the wing on top of the plane gives it more lift. Lift helps keep the plane floating in the air. As a beginner you are going to want a plane that floats by itself, especially if you run into trouble.

3. Large wingspan. A large wingspan will also add more lift to the plane.

4. 2 or 3 channels. 2-channel planes allow you to control the up/down and side to side (turning) movement of the plane. A 3-channel will allow you to do the same, but also allows you to control the speed of the motor. This allows you to control the pitch of the plane. A 4-channel plane is too much for a beginner. The 4th channel is used to control the ailerons which are used in more advanced flying.

5. Anti Crash Technology (ACT). This is not found in very many planes, but if you find one that uses it this technology is great. These planes use sensors to check the direction of the plane. If they sense that the plane is going into a dive they take over control of the plane and adjust its altitude giving you more time to react and avoid a crash.

Following these guidelines will help you find a great beginner rc plane, one that you will enjoy flying for a long time. Good luck and happy flying.

Airwolf RC Helicopter Brings Back the 1980s Memories

Airwolf RC Helicopter Brings Back the 1980s Memories

Rc Helicopter

The 1980s gave us so many memories: shoulder pads, miniskirts, Iran-Iraq war, John Lennon's assassination, Nintendo, MTV (remember "Video Killed the Radio Star"?), Pac-Man, and TV series like 21 Jump Street and Airwolf. These are only some of the many things that remind us of this particular decade. Airwolf was one of the most watched American television series during the 80s. The show focuses on a state of the art military helicopter code named Airwolf, and it ran for four seasons, from 1984 to 1987. For those who are old enough to remember this TV series will never forget the coolness of the helicopter. Airwolf was actually a Bell 222, which is a twin-engined light helicopter manufactured by Bell Helicopter.

Although it has been more than 30 years since Airwolf debuted, the show still has some loyal, hard core fans. Fans can relive the heyday of this once popular television series with the Airwolf radio controlled (RC) helicopter. The Airwolf RC helicopter is the miniaturized replica of the Bell 222 helicopter. It is the perfect toy for loyal fans of the TV show as well as RC airplanes enthusiasts. Today, many toy manufacturers have come up with their own version of the RC helicopter.

If you are a big fan of the series, you can consider getting the 4 channel super size Airwolf RC helicopter by Lie Bao. Measuring at 60 cm (more than 23 inches), it is bigger than the average RC helicopters out there. It features a flight stabilizing system which enables the helicopter to maintain a stable hover, dual propeller system with revolutionary co-axial rotor technology, and 4 channel FM transmitter. It comes equipped with a lithium polymer 7.4V 1,400 mAh battery. The size is L60 x W18 x H25 cm (L23 x W7 x H10 inches) and the weight is 615 gr (22 ounces).

You might also be interested in the Walkera 2.4Ghz Airwolf 5#4Q3. It is essentially a scaled down version of the Bell 222 helicopter used in the TV series. It also includes similar features as the Lie Bao Airwolf RC copter such as 4 channel FM transmitter and co-axial twin rotor blades system. The Walkera Airwolf is easy to fly for beginners and equipped with a tricycle undercarriage with retractable wheel for taking off and landing. The 2.4 Gigahertz radio system uses less current than standard frequency radio systems, resulting in longer battery life and flight time.

Electric RC Helicopters - The Future Has Arrived

Electric RC Helicopters - The Future Has Arrived

Rc Helicopter

RC helicopters have truly carved out a niche in the imaginations and hobby pursuits of many more people than in the past, largely due to the advent of inexpensive and technologically advanced electric RC helicopters, the hobby is reaching new heights! Back in the day, which wasn't very many days ago, the choice was limited to gas powered birds, and if you either didn't have the money, skill, or stomach to withstand all the gas and oil smoke and exhaust, you just went in search of something else to do. The idea of flying mini-versions of real helicopters has always captured the imagination of many, but only those with deeper pockets and stronger stomachs could apply. Now, that is no longer the case!

Now, thanks to the tremendous advances in batteries, motors and electronic components over the last few years, electric RC helicopters have carved out a niche all their own, and have claimed a large share of the market. Now you have choices. Who, for example, would have even considered flying their gas powered RC helicopter in the house? Now it's not only possible, but common! Some of the major advantages of electric RC helicopters include no messy maintenance, smaller, more controllable flights, shorter learning curves, less expensive (generally), no noise or any other kind of pollution, and no stalling in mid air, as many gas birds can and will do.

And the batteries for electric RC helicopters are getting better. Most can now handle Lithium Polymer batteries, allowing them to stay aloft as long as their gas counterparts. Easier to learn, most electric RC helicopters use only 2,3 or 4 channels, making getting hang of this a lot easier. Some have twin rotors that spin in opposite directions, obviating the need for tail rotors (and hence another channel!)

And another cool thing is that they are getting me and more advanced, with newer, more powerful and realistic models hitting the shelves all the time. And another great thing about electric RC helicopters, and is that they are much more readily available, now found in most toy stores and not only in hobby shops, as most gas powered models are.

Electric RC helicopters have landed and are here for the long haul! Take one out for a spin today!

RC Army Helicopters For Kids

RC Army Helicopters For Kids

Rc Helicopter

There are many people looking for that great gift idea for kids. I think that a perfect gift for a girl or boy would be Army helicopters. Army helicopters are a great way to introduce kids to the remote control hobbies arena. It is also a great way to get kids excited about the military if mom and dad are military people or big supporters.

RC military helicopters come in two varieties usually. One being the Chinook and the other being the Apache. The Chinook is an odd looking multi passenger helicopter with two blades on top. The Apache looks like it is ready to blow up something.

With many helicopters to choose from in the market today, I suggest to purchase a Army chopper. These things are cool looking and will be the envy of men and kids alike. They just look and sound so neat. Don't forget to get the extras. I would splurge and get the best copter and radio system within my budget and then invest in an on board video camera. That way you can see from a bird's eye view what you have done with your toy.

RC hobbies are great way to improve kids lives in ways like play outside. Running, to chase the helicopter and exercise just moving around to see what it is doing. You can add extras like smoke release and parachute men. I personally love to have parachute men ready to jump out of the helicopter like paratroopers. It is awesome to have others watch as well.

As you can tell I have a passion for these and I think that the child in your life be it a 8 year old or 60 year old would love to have one of these choppers to play with. Lots of people don't know what hobbies to get into what a great way to find out by getting a RC army helicopter.

Hobby Zone Super Cub Ready to Fly radio controlled airplane

Hobby Zone Super Cub Ready to Fly radio controlled airplane Video Clips.

Next I made a climbing turn back toward the field and with the Cub flying straight and level I fed in full DOWN elevator. After the nose dropped I seemed to lose control of the airplane: the motor cut off. After my initial panic I realized that the ACT had taken command of the airplane. The nose brought itself back up to the horizon, and as soon as the airplane was back into a normal attitude the motor came back to life and all was well again. The ACT program seems to do what you SHOULD do with this airplane if it begins to get away from you: bring the throttle to about one third power and release the stick. The Positive stability that is built into this cub is what makes it a great first airplane: it literally flies itself. I took the airplane back up to 'Training Altitude' and tried to put it into every unusual attitude I could think of. Each time I did simply bringing the throttle back and letting go of the stick resulted in the Cub returning to straight and level flight.Read the full review/article loading with pictures www.rcuniverse.com www.rcuniverse.com -World's Largest Radio Control Community http /market -Buy, Sell, and Trade RC www.rcuniverse.com -Read Radio Control online reviews and articles www.rcuvideos.com - Watch Radio Contol Videos http -Discuss Electric Radio Control Aircraft

Choosing A Good Helicopter

Choosing A Good Helicopter

Rc Helicopter

Well, that's debatable. For one thing, the inexpensive electric helicopters are very difficult to fly in the wind. Yes you can buy a pretty good one for around 0. The CX is the easiest to learn to fly as compared to the CP and the equivalent, but all helicopters, fuel powered or electric, are difficult to teach yourself to fly. Chances are good you will break many parts in the learning process and most likely give up after spending too many hours fixing, practicing and/or tons of money in the learning process. Hate to discourage you, but this is the reality of RC helicopters.

People seem to think because the helicopters are electric and cheap; it will make it easier to learn how to fly. I've trained something on the order of 300 people to hover and fly helicopters over the years and I know for a fact that is the safest, easiest and cheapest way to learn.

Fuel powered helicopters are difficult to learn to hover and fly, small electric helicopters are even harder and the tiny ones are worse. You will need a large open area to practice hovering and even then, chances are you will break things. This is something you will unfortunately find out after you spent quite a bit of money on your helicopters and replacement parts.

If you haven't already, tried installing a new and/or different type of glow plug. It is possibly there is a hole in your fuel line inside of your tank where the fuel line is attached to the metal pick up. That would cause it to stall when the tank is half empty. The engine might be overheating due to the lean mixture caused by the possible split fuel line. There are so many electric helicopters out there and it depends on what you consider is too expensive.

Save your 0 because buying those helicopters would be a total waste of money. As the saying goes, you only get what you pay for. The same goes for the cheapest electric ARF airplanes. You will need a proper trainer airplane, and any RC warplane is well beyond any beginner's abilities.

Learning to fly RC airplanes is something that is possible to learn on your own, but definitely not recommended. If you ever get a chance to find a club or an experienced flier who will let you fly a proper trainer, then you will see what I'm talking about. I believe collective helicopters are easier to fly than fixed pitched helicopters. You are correct about the CP. The small electric helicopters are for the most part are harder to fly than fuel powered helicopters.

There are several different people who are considered to be the inventor of the helicopter. I could write a book explaining it in detail, but I'll cover a couple of the primary contributors to the development of rotary wing aircraft. The ancient Chinese invented a toy for children that you can still see today. It consists of a propeller and a shaft through the middle of it. If you spin it quickly in your hands or with some other force such as a rubber band you could make it lift up and hover briefly before coming back to the ground.

The first recorded depiction of a possible manned helicopter is a diagram drawn by Leonardo da Vinci in the 1400s. The knowledge of physics necessary to successfully build a working model did not yet exist, but he understood the concept of an "air screw" that if turned fast enough would be able to drive the machine and a pilot into the air.

Over the course of the next few centuries many other people toyed with the idea of a helicopter, but again the amount of power necessary to drive such a machine into the air was not possible to generate. The invention of the internal combustion engine made the power requirement a reality. The next hurdle that needed to be overcome was the concept of torque - the phenomenon that causes the body of the helicopter to spin in the opposite direction of the main rotor.

Paul Cornu invented a working piloted helicopter in 1907, but it was not a successful design. It only generated enough lift for about 7 seconds. Another Frenchman, Etienne Oehmichen built and flew a working helicopter for about 1 kilometer in 1924.

As early as 1910, Russian born Igor Sikorsky began working on development of a manned helicopter. By 1940, his working design had become the model for all modern helicopters. It consisted of a main rotor and a tail rotor that is used to counteract the torque generated by the main rotor. This design is still used in a vast majority of helicopters today, which is why Sikorsky is considered the father of the modern helicopter.

There are many other men who contributed to the development of rotary wing aviation - too many to list here, but a thorough search of the library and/or the internet can give you tons of insight into the development and design of all different types of helicopters.

Electric RC Helicopter - The Honey Bee King 2

Electric RC Helicopter - The Honey Bee King 2

Rc Helicopter

Once you get to the level of RC helicopter flight skills where the cheaper models don't have enough functionality for you, then it is time to step up to the more advanced models. When you do this, you enter into a whole new world of RC helicopter flight with a complete different set of skills to master. The higher end models don't just hover, turn left and right, and go up and down. They also have the capability to go forwards, backwards, and control the rudder, aileron, elevator, pitch and throttle. A lot of these controls can be new and mesmerizing, but don't give up, simply read you manual and practice, practice, practice.

Ok, so you are ready to move up, which helicopter should you go with? Well, by popular demand, i would recommend the Honey Bee King 2. These fun and feisty little RC helicopters are well known and are great for stunt flying once you have the acquired skills (for a visual example, do a search on YouTube.com for the "Honey Bee King", or check out the video on our site). The Honey Bee King 2 is an electric RC helicopter that comes ready to fly. This means that when you get it there is little to no assembly required. Simply charge your battery, read the manual, and get ready to fly!

What are some of the Honey Bee King 2's features? Well, for starters, it is controlled by a 6-channel remote system. This is one of the higher amount of channel capabilities on electric RC vehicles and has a PIT and PLT mode lock switch and adjustable knob. It has improved blades for superior lift, which have a pop off design that provides extra protection for crash landings. The CCPM mixing control system and collective pitch structure make perfect 3D maneuvers such as roll, inverted flight, and swoop flights possible. This 120 degree CCPM system provides precise movement if comparing with the traditional mechanical mixing since there are less linkage/push-rods in the helicopter greatly reducing its weight. It also features Bell-heller mixing, which greatly increases the sensitivity of the whole helicopter, and provides for great acrobatic response.

The equipped O-ring inside the center hub reduces oscillation of the main blades, and the powerful 370 super carbon brush motor used for the main drive makes the helicopter's flight more stable. The motor is powered by an 11.1v high capacity Li-Po battery, which holds charge for approximately 10 minutes of straight flight time. Another feature is the auto-rotation landing system, made of a high quality one-way bearing, which provides maximum protection from damage for your helicopter. The battery on the Honey Bee King 2 holds firmly in place and can be adjusted to suit your balance of flying. The tail rotor does NOT have a motor. Instead it is driven by a belt which helps to provide stable flight and low noise, and also prevents you from burning up tail motors. And lastly, it has a servo controlled rudder, just like gas helicopters.

How big is it? The Honey Bee King 2 is approximately 535 mm long (21 inches), 225 mm high (8.9 inches), has a flying weight of 470g (16.6 oz), is powered by a 370 super carbon brush motor, and has 4 - 8g servos and an outside piezo gyro.

What comes in the kit? There are two color options, white or yellow. The kit includes the Honey Bee King 2 electric RC helicopter (100% assembled), the 6-channel CCPM multi-functional FM RC Transmitter (remote, batteries not included), the Li-Polymer battery charger with Auto cut-off, a high quality 11.1v 1000mah Li-Polymer rechargeable battery pack, and the instruction manual.

Who should purchase it? This RC helicopter is perfect for people who want to move up from a 4-channel helicopter. It is also great for intermediate pilots or pilots who want to try inverted or 3D aerobatic flight. It is NOT a helicopter for a child.

To see a picture of the Honey Bee King 2, click on WHITE or YELLOW. Also, feel free to check out our other Electric RC Helicopters, or the video of the Honey Bee King on our home page

The Gas Helicopter Vs the Electric Helicopter

The Gas Helicopter Vs the Electric Helicopter

Rc Helicopter

I am very enthusiastic about flying and building Remote Controlled Helicopters, and enjoy working with both The Gas Helicopter and the Electric Helicopter.

The Electric Remote Control Helicopter

The last Electric Remote Control Helicopter I purchased was the Twister Medevac Bell 47. The classic war helicopter made famous by the seventies comedy drama show 'MASH'.

The Twister Medevac Bell 47 is a great Electric Remote Control Helicopter and is good for beginners and experts alike. It comes RTF (ready to fly) out of the box and with a little practice - flies like a dream. The reason it is so easy to fly is due to the co-axial design of the blades. It has two main sets of blades, one above the , that turn in opposite directions and because of this a tail rotor blade is not necessary. All in all it gives a great flying experience.

This model is now mainly unavailable, but never fear there is a new Electric Remote Control Helicopter available which is the same design.

Introducing the ESKY Lama 2 V3 Electric Remote Control Helicopter. This is a great Helicopter and is the same design as the Twister Medevac Bell 47.

In conclusion the Electric Remote Control Helicopter is affordable and easy to fly with a little practice and is enjoyed by beginners and experts alike, with the added advantage of coming RTF out of the box, especially if all you want to do is enjoy the flying without getting involved with the building.

The Remote Control Gas Helicopter

When entering the world of the Gas helicopter, there is a lot more to think about.

Are you serious about Flying Remote Controlled Helicopters?

Are you in it for the long haul?

I don't mean to sound so serious, but when entering the world of the Gas Helicopter you will be spending a lot more time and money, and need to make sure its what you want to do.

A good entry level Gas Helicopter is the Thunder Tiger Raptor 30 V2 ARF. It come 90% built and doesn't cost a fortune, which is great for your first project.

Although the Raptor 30 V2 ARF is widely recognized as an entry level Gas Helicopter, it is still capable of some excellent maneuvers and 3D flying. It is not only used by beginners but by experts as well. It is also so has a wide range of spares available and is easily upgradable.

In conclusion the Gas Helicopter gives you a much better flying experience but is for someone who is serious about flying and is in it for some time to come.

Learning to Fly an RC Helicopter

Learning to Fly an RC Helicopter

Rc Helicopter

Here I will begin the lesson of learning to fly a helicopter. You want an instructor. You want to learn the parts of the helicopter. What is a tail rotor and why is it important? How long to learn? Just some of the important steps to learn to fly.

The main parts of a helicopter are cockpit, cabin, tail boom, tail rotor, main rotor, skids, and engine. The cockpit is where the pilot sits in the helicopter. The cabin is the area to sit. Not as important on RC helicopters. The tail boom is the long part that looks like a tail. The tail rotor is the part that spins the blades in the back of the helicopter. The main rotor is the big blades on top of the helicopter. The skids are the ski looking things on the bottom of the helicopter. The engine is the main power on top of the cabin.

The tail rotor basically makes the rotor or blades in the back of the helicopter rotate in the opposite direction as the main rotor. This is done to keep the helicopter going straight. The skids are the landing gear. The cockpit is the control area of the helicopter. You need to know some of the main parts of a helicopter before you start the learning to fly process.

Learning to fly is the fun part. Once you know how to fly the helicopter all you have are the skills to get better. Practice makes you better at anything: landing, take offs, hovering, and forward movement. You want to perfect the landing. Why? It is crucial to skills challenges. It will impress your friends. It saves your heli from damage. The take off is important as well. You don't want to crash as soon as you take off. Sometimes the take off area is tight to maneuver. Hovering is just staying in the same spot in the air. It is pretty cool to hover. Forward movement is getting from one place to another in a straight line. Ok, you don't have to go exactly straight but it is even cooler to go exactly where you want to go.

Really the first step to helicopter piloting is getting an experienced instructor in your area. Pay the man some money to get him motivated. Now go flying. Take your time and learn the basics. You don't want to pay a couple hundred bucks for a RC helicopter and bust it on the first flight. Of course it just adds to the frustration of learning but if you slow down and give yourself a good 10 weeks of practice you will be happy with the results. Don't worry about being out the money for paying an instructor. If you have enough patience, one day you can return the favor to a rookie pilot.

Developments of the Walkera RC Helicopters

Developments of the Walkera RC Helicopters

Rc Helicopter

Walkera RC helicopters are becoming quite popular in the market and there are various designs that are quite common. Though most of the designs of the helis are meant for the outside, more and more designs are becoming quite useful in the interior. The helicopters are made by the Walkera technology company limited that has engineers concerned with the actual development of the Walkera heli as well as enough space to conduct testing of the helicopters. The company is regarded as one of the best producers of the product for sales records and it also boasts of satisfying their customers need at best.

The Walkera brand of helicopters was designed for ideal situations giving long lasting services and ease of operation. The design of the Walkera helicopter is quite easy such that handling can be done easily. Since the helis are mostly electric they do utilize mechanics, kinetics and dynamics, electrical and software resources to ensure that the helicopters easily fly without much hindrance or struggling in handling. Though the construction of the Walkera heli is quite friendly to the extent that there are LCD screen fitted in the transmitter, the overall cost of the model is quite low and thus affordable.

For durability the material used in the construction of the Walkera RC helicopters is plastic, though tough it is still susceptible to various forces of nature and it would be best if one takes great care of the heli. The helis may also come with extra propeller fly bar replacements the event that they are broken under unfriendly circumstances. The controls of the Walkera helicopter are quite easy to handle minimizing the damage that can occur during flight, the size of the chopper also make it quite easy for it to be stored even though it might be use for external flights only.

The remote control system of the Walkera RC helicopters is another part that is worth mentioning. One of the most advantageous advances in the remote controls is the eradication of the necessity to change crystals of previous models in order to be compatible with newer remote systems. Some of the systems in the market are working at an impressive 2.4 GHz which make the efficiency of the whole system much higher. The response time as well as the range of the radio signal of the system is improved as the receiver and transmitter technology is improved. The principle of operation of the Walkera heli radio signals still remain the same, but on newer models it is much faster and efficient.

RC Planes For Beginners - Multiplex Easy Star is One of the Best Trainer Planes on the Market

RC Planes For Beginners - Multiplex Easy Star is One of the Best Trainer Planes on the Market

Rc Helicopter

If you are like most, the desire to fly has exerted a strong pull from a very early age. For thousands of people, radio control aviation has been the means of fulfilling that dream. With a minimal investment of time and money, anyone can fly RC aircraft. However, choosing the right plane is very important. There are many good RC planes for beginners but if you want the perfect first aircraft look no further than the Easy Star RR from Multiplex.

Park flyers or trainers make great first planes and one of the best models on the market is the Easy Star RR (Receiver Ready). Beginner planes need to be relatively slow, stable and sturdy enough to withstand crashes. While Easy Star is fairly powerful for a trainer, it handles exceptionally well at slow speeds and is also a good glider. Easy Star is a high wing model, as RC planes for beginners should be. High wing planes have the wings attached on top of the body or fuselage. This adds to stability and makes the aircraft more forgiving, important when you are first leaning the controls. Constructed of durable foam material, Easy Star is tough enough to survive crashes without breaking and easy repairable if it does. For extra protection and safety, the electric motor is mounted on top with propeller facing rearwards.

While RC planes for beginners are available in electric and glow engine models, more and more new pilots start off and stay with electric power. Electrics offer performance comparable to glow-powered planes without the maintenance and messiness of fuel. Easy Star RR comes with ready built model and pre-installed Permax 400 Speed/6V electric motor, Multicont X-16 electronic speed control and 2 MPX Tiny-S servos. All you need to add is 3-channel transmitter and receiver and flight battery.

Many RC planes for beginners are too tame for pilots past the beginner stage but that is not the case with the Easy Star. Capable of performing loops and stalls, this trainer can be enjoyed by intermediate level fliers too. If you want to fly but think it may be too hard or take too long to learn, try the Multiplex Easy Star RR. Not only will you be getting a great beginner airplane, you will also have a model that continues to provide entertainment as you become better and better at RC flying!

RC Coaxial Helicopter - The Difference Between Toys And The Rest

RC Coaxial Helicopter - The Difference Between Toys And The Rest

Rc Helicopter

When you start out learning to fly radio controlled model helicopters you are immediately confronted by a multitude of choices. One of the first things you will notice is that you get two basic types of radio controlled helicopters to choose from namely those with a single rotor and those with a double set of main rotors, the coaxial RC helicopter.

Within each of those groups you will also find quite a few variations, which may make little sense at first glance.

I will concentrate here on the coaxial RC helicopter and highlight the differences within this group, and mention some of the benefits of learning your RC helicopter controls on this type of radio controlled model helicopter.

When I started looking around you could find a RC helicopter in most toy shops. One of the popular types you will find in toy shops is the configuration with a horizontal tail rotor driven by a tiny electric engine sitting right under the tail rotor.

Although this type of RC helicopter - some of the smaller ones are actually infra-red controlled - can be flown successfully, it has fairly limited maneuverability. The forward and backward movements are controlled by the horizontal tail rotor: rotating in one direction will lift the tail up and push the heli forward. Rotating in the other direction will push the tail down and drag the heli backwards.

Turning this heli happens by pointing the nose in the direction you want to go, and this is controlled by the difference in rotating speeds of the two main rotors. The heli will turn in the rotational direction of the slower rotor.

The drawback with this horizontal tail rotor arrangement? This heli can't bank in a turn as would be necessary in a faster turn. I also found control difficulties as the tail wants to "overtake" the main rotor in forward flight. It was much easier to fly backwards as the tail rotor would essentially pull the rest of the machine along.

I tried my level best, but I couldn't coax any serious controlled flight out of my toy coaxial helicopter, and I essentially wrote it off within days of putting in serious effort to control it properly. The toy shop also didn't carry spares!

So, what comes next?

I decided to give the toy shop a rest and popped into the local hobby shop. There the guys showed me a different kind of coaxial RC helicopter, a much more serious machine with a "real life" swash plate. Without going into a lot of detail, the swash plate makes it possible for the heli to bank in any direction by tilting the whole rotor (the bottom one of the two counter-rotating main rotors) on command from the radio transmitter.

Because of that swash plate this coaxial heli doesn't use a tail rotor to propel it in a direction.

I bought this hobby grade heli - a 'Nine Eagles Swordfish' - and found it amazingly maneuverable, and in a short time I managed to learn the basics of RC helicopter controls, all the while having a lot of fun both indoors and outside!

Episode 1-Gas, Jets, Nightflying, Crashes, Jets, and fun at the Sibley RC Fly-In. Video Clips.

*** PLEASE READ before Commenting*** The 2011 Sibley Fly-In had very few crashes, but still a few! Everywhere I ever flew over the past 55 years of modeling, there were crashes. Most happened from brain fade or inexperience. Back then, many of them happened because of radio interference or equipment failure. But they do happen and everybody involved with modeling knows they and the spectators must pay attention at all times when someone is flying. What could go wrong? We don't put too many planes in the air at the same time and usually let the heli guys have their turn too. Many do not, but me being committed to AMA safety rules, I try to fly safely and allow everybody their turn. And if your going to make a high speed pass down the runway, call it first to alert folks and other pilots. If unsafe, do not do it. And join the AMA to have the camaraderie and the insurance....just in case. RC Helicopter Blade Tracking

RC Helicopter Blade Tracking

Rc Helicopter

RC helicopter blade tracking has been a mystery to many new RC helicopter owners, but I'm going to demystify the whole concept for you right now so that you'll have a complete understanding of blade tracking by the time you finish reading this article.

First, we need to answer this important question: What is blade tracking?

Essentially, blade tracking is when one rotor blade rotates in a circular motion and the following blade follows exactly behind it. Both rotor blades spin on the same plane without one blade being higher or lower than the blade it's following. Another way to look at it is that both blades travel through the same airspace created by their spinning. If the rear blade is following the front blade on a higher or lower plane, then it can cause a lot of unwanted vibrations for the RC helicopter.

How To Track Your Blades

If you're flying your RC helicopter for the first time, you need to see if the blades are tracking properly and you may need some help from an experienced RC helicopter pilot. You can check the blade tracking by simply hovering the helicopter in place at eye level and looking at the blades as it hovers. If you see a lot of shaking and vibrating, your RC helicopter is more than likely not tracking properly. If you're not sure if it's tracking properly, do this:

Get two different colors of tape and apply a small strip of one color to one blade. Put a red strip on one blade and a blue strip on the other blade. By using a different color on each blade, it makes it a lot easier to see which blade might be out of track.

Now that you've applied the colored tape, have an experienced RC helicopter pilot hover the helicopter in place so that you can see the blades as they spin. As you watch the blades spin, you'll know if they're in track if you only see a single circle or both blades spinning on one line. If you see two circles or two lines, (red above blue or vice versa) then you'll know that one of the blades are off and needs to be aligned.

To properly track your rotor blades, you need to land the hovering RC helicopter first. After the blades have stopped spinning, you can adjust the blade that is out of alignment. You'll need to have your RC helicopter manual handy so that you can look up the proper blade tracking information in it. Be sure that you adjust the correct linkages in what the manual says and not what someone says. This is the best way to be sure that you've done it correctly.

Once you've tightened or loosened the correct linkage or linkages, you need to have someone fly the helicopter again so that you can look at the blades. You'll repeat this process as often as needed until your blades are tracked properly and they spin on the same plane. Once you've completed proper blade tracking, your RC helicopter will handle a lot smoother than it did before and be much easier to fly.
